Sleepout Portable: How It Works, Sizes, What's Included, and Travel

Sleepout Portable is a tool-free blackout curtain that attaches directly to glass with locking suction cups. The cups can attach anywhere along the top of the curtain, so you can adjust the fit. Extra material around the curtain's perimeter helps it sit flush against the window and block light around the edges.

The curtain uses true 100% blackout fabric and ThermaGuard technology to help block light, sound, and temperature. The fabric is certified non-toxic through OEKO-TEX® and GREENGUARD certification. Sizes and fit

Sleepout Portable is listed in two dimensions:

  • 62 × 40 inches

  • 86 × 54 inches

You can hang a panel horizontally or vertically. It works on a window that is smaller than the curtain fabric. For smaller windows, adjust or fold the panel to fit. For a larger window, place two panels side by side. For rooms with multiple windows, use additional panels.

Bay windows, sliding windows, and windows with a center pane or changing depth may also need extra suction cups.

Each Sleepout Portable includes:

  • One reusable carrying bag

Weight and packed size

The curtain panel weighs 1.5 lb. When packed in its carrying bag, it measures approximately 14 × 4 × 4 inches.

New-curtain creases

Creases from tight transit packing are normal. To reduce them, you can:

  • Wash the curtain.

  • Steam the curtain.

  • Hang it for a few hours.

  • Leave it in use and allow the creases to relax over time.

How to fold it into the carrying bag

  1. Remove extra suction cups and other supplies from the bag to make room.

  2. Follow the panel's natural creases and fold it in half repeatedly. If you steamed out the creases, fold it in half in either direction.

  3. When it is about the size of a large book, roll it lengthwise.

  4. Place it in the reusable carrying bag.

  How to Choose Your Curtain Size Each Sleepout curtain is 52″ wide. Follow these steps before installing your curtain rod. Step 1: Plan Your Rod Width Measure the window frame from edge to edge, then add at least 12″ so the rod extends 6″ past each side. Window width + 12″ = planned rod width Step 2: Choose 2 or 4 Curtains Rod up to 52″: Choose 2 curtains Rod wider than 52″: Choose 4 curtains This gives the curtains enough fabric to create a full, gathered look when closed. Step 3: Choose Your Length Sleepout curtains are available in 64″, 84″, 96″ and 108″ lengths. 84″ is the most common choice, but taller windows and ceilings may need 96″ or 108″ curtains. Step 4: Buy Your Curtains Before Installing the Rod Order your curtains first. Once they arrive, place them on the rod and hold them where you want the curtains to end—typically just above the floor. Mark the bracket position, then install the rod at that height. This ensures your curtains hang at exactly the right length.

How to Install the Wrap-Around Rod

Curtain Rod Installation Instructions Please note, you will need two people to install this rod. 1. Assemble the Curtain Rod Start by threading the curtain rod pieces together. They should connect smoothly. If they don’t, they may not be properly aligned—double-check and realign as needed. Make sure the pieces on each end of the rod are the ones with the head mounts (these have small holes near the ends). 2. Determine the Rod Length Hold the assembled rod up to your window to decide on the ideal width. We recommend going as wide and as high as possible for the best look and coverage, so the curtains just touch the floor. Screw on one bracket (either side). 3. Position the Curtains Slide your curtains onto the rod. Hold the rod with curtains up to the window to visualize where the brackets should go. Put the other bracket on the rod once all of your curtains are on the rod & ready to be hung. 4. Mark Bracket Placement Once you’ve chosen a general height and width, mark all 4 bracket holes on the wall with a pencil. You can either screw directly into the wall or drill a pilot hole first, about the size of the screw. 5. Ensure the Bracket Holes Are Level Check that both bracket holes are level using a level tool or by eye. If needed, adjust one of the marks to match the other. 6. Have someone hold the rod with the curtains, while the brackets are screwed into place. Note: the brackets should be fully tightened into the ends of the rod.The brackets must be aligned with so both will screw into the wall, so one will be loose to allow for it to be installed.

What Is Sleepout Fabric Made Of? Blackout, Safety, and Care

Sleepout® fabric is a proprietary synthetic, polyester-based weave. The sewn-in label reads “100% polyester.” It combines full blackout performance, durability, portability, and low chemical emissions. 100% blackout Sleepout fabric blocks 100% of light—not “mostly” or “almost.” It can make a room dark during the day, helping cue the body to rest and making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Thermal and noise insulation The dense fabric provides thermal insulation, helping keep a room cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It also dampens outside noise for a quieter sleep environment. Although blackout fabrics can absorb heat, Sleepout curtains use an HOA-approved white backing that reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it. Feel, durability, portability, and care The fabric is softer than stiff or plastic-feeling blackout materials and is designed for durability. It is lightweight, foldable, machine-washable, and suitable for travel, hotels, or anywhere you need a dark sleep space. It works with Sleepout curtain products, including Sleepout Portable. Material and safety rationale Sleepout chose a proprietary polyester-based weave to avoid harmful treatments and chemical residues while maintaining blackout performance and durability. Cotton, linen, and other “natural” curtain fabrics can require processing such as: Formaldehyde-based resins for wrinkle resistance and shape retention Plastic-based coatings to stabilize fibers Sterilization chemicals during finishing A “100% cotton” label may not account for synthetic additives, and some natural-fiber curtains fail standards such as GREENGUARD Gold because of formaldehyde and other toxins. Sleepout's polyester construction is the only approach the company found that met its safety and performance goals. Certifications and chemical safety Sleepout fabric is lab-tested, certified non-toxic, and hypoallergenic.
